About DaumDaum Crystal was founded in Nancy in 1875 by Jean Daum. The region, Lorraine, had a great tradition of glassmaking. In 1885, Antonin, son of Jean Opened the 'art department' in which Daums' master glassmakers excelled in all techniques, from 'working at-the-fire' to gold and enamel painting. Daum were awarded the Grand Prix during the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and the Art Nouveaux Style brought about the first phase of the creation of purely decorative pieces. In 1901, Daum created 'Ecole de Nancy'. Refinement of the 'pāte de verre' technique, (in which an original sculpture by an artist is taken and a negative mold produced. Pieces of coloured crystal are placed into the mold, which is fired for at least ten days, then broken, revealing the sculpture in pāte de verre. The mold is broken each time making every piece unique) in 1968, gave extra dimensions to Daum's creations. Daum produce limited edition sculptures, which are hand worked at every stage, making the finished articles much sought after. Piers Christian are authorised stockists of the Daum Crystal range. |
