In the early stages of the battle of Gettysburg General John Buford deployed his division including the 8th Illinios Cavalry who successfully fought a delaying action in the face of superior numbers holding back the Rebels long enough to allow General John Reynolds to bring up his 1st Corps and stabilize the Union line.
